Havana Man Killed as Train Hits Pickup

Elmer Hays, 74, of Havana was killed when the pickup in which he was riding was hit by a Rock Island freight train at Havana Thursday morning at about 9:15.

Mrs. Iva Lucas Turner of Havana, driver of the pickup, said the motor died on the tracks and she jumped out. Hays stayed in the truck.

Conductor on the west-bound freight train was R.L. Vandiver of North Little Rock and engineer was Charlie Cauthron of Little Rock.

Parts of Hays' body were scattered for about 100 yards down the track and the pickup was dragged for about one-half mile before the train came to a stop.

The accident happened at the Mitchell Street Crossing about four blocks west of the main street of Havana.

State Trooper Richard Powell investigated the accident. Hays was a veteran of World War I, a retired rock mason and carpenter. He is survived by one brother, L.R. Hays of Belleville.

Funeral Services were held Nov. 17 at the Wilson church with burial in Russell Cemetery.

Mrs. Nora Hays, affectionately known as Aunt Sae, died Wednesday near McAlester, Okla., and the body was to be returned to Waveland for interment.

Peggy Hazel

Peggy Joyce Coates Hazel, age 77, of Plainview passed away Thursday, May 8, 2014 at her home. She was born March 12, 1937 at Little Rock, Arkansas to the late George Cecil & Verdie Virginia Treadway Coates. She was preceded in death by her parents as well as grandson Michael Austin Hazel.

Peggy graduated from Central High School in 1955 and married William Thurston Hazel, on June 2, 1956. She worked for H&T Construction from 1969 to 1992; Reliable Life Insurance Company from 1965 to 1988; PJs Market from 1988 to 1992; Kroger from 1992 until she retired in 2003 and UAMS from 2003 until she retired again in 2005. Finally, Peggy decided it was time to honor her "retirements" and enjoy life.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years William Thurston Hazel; three sons, Randy Hazel of Little Rock; Kenneth Hazel (Jennifer) of Allen, TX; Larry Hazel (Bobbie) of Houston, AR; one daughter Lisa Gay (Chester) of Plainview; 7grandchildren Courtney Gay and fiancee Shawn Ramsey of Little Rock; Logan Gay of Plainview; Spencer Gay of Star City; Magan Hazel and Connor Hazel of Little Rock; Scarlett Hazel of Allen Texas; and one great-grandchild Ryder Gay of Plainview; sister Patricia Simpson of Dallas Texas one niece Nancy Simpson of Dallas, Texas and a hosts of cousins and friends.

Graveside service was held 10:00 a.m. Monday, May 12, 2014 at Carter Cove Cemetery with Bro Joe Yates officiating. Visitation was 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Sunday May 11, at the funeral home.

Pallbearers were Randy Hazel, Ken Hazel, Larry Hazel, Logan Gay, and Spencer Gay.

Thurston Randall "Randy" Hazel, age 58, of Little Rock passed away Thursday, October 21, 2016, at Arkansas Heart Hospital.

He was born March 2, 1958, in Little Rock, Arkansas to the late William Thurston & Peggy Joyce Coates Hazel. He was a carpenter, attended Pulaski Heights Baptist Church, enjoyed fishing, also raced 1-30 speedway in the Gray Ghost.

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

He was the loving father of Magan & Connor Hazel of Littie Rock; his sister, Lisa & Chester Gay of Plainview; his brothers, Ken & Jennifer Hazel of Allen, TX; Larry Hazel (Bobbie) of Conway; several nephews, nieces, numerous other relative and friends.

Graveside were held at 10 am Monday, October 24, 2016, at Carter Cove Cemetery with Rev. Johnny Upchurch officiating.

William Thurston Hazel

William Thurston Hazel, age 76, of Plainview passed away Sunday, December 14, 2014 at St. Vincents Infirmary in Little Rock.

He was born September 20, 1938 in Conway, Arkansas to the late George William & Irene Zora Richards Hazel Jr. Thurston attended Conway High School, married Peggy Joyce Coates on June 2, 1956. He owned and operated H & T construction in Little Rock from 1962 to 1992. After retirement he & his wife moved to Carter Cove where he enjoyed fishing on Nimrod Lake.

He was preceded in death by his wife Peggy Hazel; parents; grandson Michael Austin Hazel; three brothers and one sister.

Survivors include daughter, Lisa Gay & husband Chester of Plainview; sons, Randy Hazel of Little Rock; Kenneth Hazel & wife Jennifer of Allen TX; Larry Hazel & fiancé Bobbie Rush of Houston, AR; grandchildren, Courtney & Shawn Ramsey of Little Rock; Logan Gay of Plainview; Spencer Gay & fiancé Hannah Dreher of Star City; Magan Hazel of Little Rock; Conner Hazel of Hot Springs; and great-grandson, Ryder Gay of Plainview.

Graveside service will be Thursday, December 18 at 10:00 a.m. at Carter Cove Cemetery with Rev. Monroe Hunt and Bro Johnny UpChurch officiating. Visitation will be 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. before service at graveside.

Richard Heaps, 89, Cameron (formerly of Carthage, MO and Rock County, NE) passed away Sunday, June 5, 2011 in Cameron, MO.

He was born February 1, 1922 in Cherry County, NE, the son of John Franklin and Alice Lucille (Chrisman) Heaps.

On December 26, 1961, he married Josephine Klober. She preceded him in death August 4, 2008.

He was a rancher and farmer in Rock County, NE and Carthage, MO.

Survivors include a son, Larry (Pat) Heaps of Gallatin, MO; daughter, Juanita (Joe) Whiteld, Springfield, MO; brother, Albert (Del) Heaps, Carthage, MO; three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He also was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Rosella and Virginia, and a brother, Edward.

Graveside services and burial will be Friday, June 10 at 11:00 a.m. at Brearley Cemetery, Dardanelle, AR. The family will receive friends from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Friday at Cornwell Funeral Home, Dardanelle, AR.

Lawrence Devan Hearing, age 74, of Ola passed away September 11, 2015, at Deerview Nursing Home in Ola.

He was born March 5, 1941, in Cherry Valley, Arkansas to the late Roy Cole & Lucille Ewton Hearing. He was a member and a Deacon of the Plainview Freewill Baptist Church, an Army Veteran, a member of the Plainview VFW and American Legion of Russellville.

He was preceded in death by his father, Roy Hearing; mother, Lucille Harris; brothers, Gary and Michael Hearing and Danny Harris; sister, Anita Hearing Criner.

Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Sharon Kay Pettit Hearing; children, Jacob & Kelsy Goodwin of Rover; Quintin & Andi Pettit of Ola; Shawn & Jasmin Pettit of Danville; grandchildren, Elizabeth, Braxton and Jaxson Goodwin and Jeremiah Pettit; brothers and sisters, Catherine Mallet; Nina Spencer; Billy Joe Harris; Dorothy Brown; Jim Harris; Tommy Harris; Mary Jane Smith; Patricia Gettel; Cynthia Brown; Omer Harris; Mack Harris; Larry Harris; Shelby Harris; brother-in- law, Kennith Pettit; sister-in-law, Kathy Ewton.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 pm Monday, September 14, 2015, at the Plainview Freewill Baptist Church with Military Honors and with Denver Robinson and Ronnie Morris officiating. Burial was at Needmore Cemetery in Casa. Visitation was at 1:00 to 2:00 pm before service at the church.

Howard M. "Dado" Hearn

(1932-2011)

Howard M. "Dado" Hearn, 79, of Vickery Road, Carlsbad, New Mexico, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2011, at Landsun Homes.

Visitation will be 3 to 7 p.m. today, Oct. 20, at Denton-Wood Funeral Home.

A graveside service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 21, at Carlsbad Cemetery with Pastor Tim Funchess officiating.

Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Howard Morris Hearn was born on July 5, 1932, in Roxton, Texas, to Morris and Oma Viola (Martin) Hearn.

He attended Carlsbad Public Schools. Howard married Jessie Bernice Janway on August 21, 1950 in Carlsbad, New Mexico. He worked for his stepfather, Paul Cain at Cain and Cain Garage; he started working when he was 12 years old. When Howard was 15 years old he started following the wheat harvest with his uncle during the summer. When he was 17 he worked for Bond Ice Company. In 1951 Howard went to work for Hill Lines Trucking Company until 1954 when he went to work for US Potash Company, which later became Mississippi.

Later Howard went to work for Teledyne where he worked until he retired as a journeyman mechanic in 1993. Howard loved to hunt and fish and spend time with his family. When his grandchildren came along they started calling him "Dado," a name that everyone who knew him called him. When you went to visit him at Landsun if you just said, "I came to see Dado" they knew who you wanted to see. He loved kids from the day they were born until they were adults. He loved to sit and watch them even if he didn't know them. You could never be sad around him, he would do a little twisting move or twist his face all up until he got you to laugh.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jessie Bernice Hearn; son, Robert Kent Hearn; daughter, Wetana Karen Hearn; mother, Oma Viola Cain, stepfather, Paul Cain; mother and father-in-law, Jess and Nance Janway.

Survivors are his daughter, Kay Roper and husband, Terry, of Carlsbad, N.M.; three grandchildren: Shannon Vallejos and husband, Gabe, of Carlsbad, N.M., Teresa Messer and husband, Tray, of Carlsbad, N.M., Angie Vasquez and husband, Jimmy, of Malaga, N.M.; 8 great-grandchildren: Ryan Vasquez, Rocky Beal, Randy Beal, Rayen Bushman, Trystan Messer, Traelyn Messer, Chanlee Vasquez and Jostyn Vasquez; brother, Paul Cain and wife, Dilys, of Genoa, Nev.; sister, Betty Funchess and husband, Edward, of Carlsbad, N.M. and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Jimmy Vasquez, Tray Messer, Gabe Vallejos, Rocky Beal, Randy Beal and Ryan Vasquez. Memorial contributions may be made to Landsun Homes Hospice, 1815 Westridge Road, Carlsbad, NM 88220.

John Henry Heath


John Henry Heath, 73, of Dardanelle, a retired processing plant employee, died Wednesday. Heath was a member of Faith Assembly of God and veteran of World War II.

Visitation will be from 7 - 8 p.m. today at Seay Funeral Home. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home by the Rev. David Jay. Burial will be in Haney Cemetery.

Survivors are his wife, Edna Haney Heath; a son, William Clyde Heath of Russellville; a daughter, Lutrishia Kellar of Escalon. Calif.; a stepdaughter, Cilestene Jay of Dardanelle; two brothers, Lloyd Heath of Dardanelle and Willie Lavoid Heath of Pottsville; a sister, Elenanor Darby of Russellville: and nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, a step-grandchild and seven step-great-grandchildren.
