BROTHER KILLS BROTHER

Russellville, July 23, 1923

Jess Church, aged 18, fatally stabbed his brother, Preacher Church, aged 16, in a drunken brawl Saturday night, while a dance was in progress in an out- house on the Petty farm, five miles north of Hector. Deputy Sheriff Alvin Stutts, of Hector, arrested Church Sunday morning and brought him to Russellville, where he is held pending an investigation.

From information brought to the city by the deputy sheriff, the two youths, who had had no previous quarrel, engaged in a fight while drunk, with the result that Jess Church was severely wounded by being struck over the head with a club and Preacher Church lost his life.

After the fight Jess went to the home of his girl, who accompanied him to the dance, and spent the night. When he awoke the next morning he was told that he killed his brother. He professed to have no knowledge of the fight and said he was so drunk that he did not remember anything that happened at the dance.

Both the youths are sons of a prominent farmer, Marion Church, who lives about 30 miles inland, in Jackson township. Church will be given a preliminary hearing as soon as the facts can be established by the officers.
