Mike Patton - Yell Co. deputy dies in accident

... Sheriff and judge remember a friend

BELLEVILLE - A part-time Yell County sheriff's deputy died Thursday night after an agricultural machinery accident. But what co-workers and friends remember about Mike Patton, 36, is not the accident, but his work ethic, love of family and caring nature.

Patton, who also worked as a full-time employee for Yell County, repaired and replaced road signs, Sheriff Bill Gilkey said. Patton, a Belleville-Ranger community resident, was working on the front of a tractor when it extended and pinned him between the machine's loader and grill area.

... Gilkey spoke of Patton's love of family

"He was very dedicated to his family and his job," Gilkey said. "Mike was one of those people that nothing was ever about him. He was always about everyone else, and he was just the kind of person that went out and took care of everybody else."

Patton was always there to help out when a problem arose, Gilkey said.
"It didn't matter how deep the water was, how cold it was, or what time the day or night," Gilkey said. "You didn't have to call upon Mike because Mike was there, and he just cared so much about people."

Yell County Judge Brad Wear agreed, saying Patton was a loyal and hardworking employee who will be sorely missed.

"Mike had so much love for his family," Wear said. "Family meant everything in the world to him, his two girls and wife."

"Like I told his wife a while ago, he will be missed at his job, but mainly because he was a true friend, and we loved him like a brother. I don't know of a person who didn't like Mike. He was a non-conflict guy, and he always tried to get along with everybody."
