Mrs. Evert Covey
Death in Fire
Mrs. Evert Covey, 26, (nee, Mary Emma Turner) formerly of Yell Co., came here with her son, Billy Charles, age 5, from Amarillo, Texas, Sept. 3 and has been staying with her sister, Mrs. Calvin Hicks, and picking cotton, lost her life some time previous to five o'clock Monday morning when a fire of unknowing origin destroyed the Hicks home she had been living in.
Sunday night Mrs. Covey parted with her son, Billy Charles, and her sister at the nearby home of relatives, the Edley Maddens, to go to the show with some young friends. They had the understanding that if the Madden light was burning Mrs. Covey was to stay there, if not burning it would mean Mrs. Hicks had gone home and Mrs. Covey was to join her there.
Accordingly, Mrs. Covey was taken home by her friends who left at about 12:30 as shown by evidence before the coroner's jury.
Monday morning about five o'clock, Walter Dennis on the Dutch Creek road, awoke and discovered the Hicks home burning and shot the alarm that brought the people to the fire, the building and contents were in charcoal and ashes. When her sister, Mrs. Hicks, knew of the fire she feared for her sister, Mrs. Covey, and investigation revealed the remains of the woman were almost past identification and had to be taken up with a shovel and put in a tub, until prepared for burial.
A coroners jury was empaneled and their conclusion was, death was the result of fire.
The husband of Mrs. Covey is working in California.
The last Mrs. Covey was seen alive was about 12:30 when she told her friends goodbye at the door.
General opinion is that the fire started from a cigarette that smoldered, then caused the fire and her death. She had evidently awaked and went from her bed toward the window and fell.
It was a three-room house and the room the body was in had an outside door on the south, to a porch, a window in the east and a door in the north to the kitchen.
If not too overcome with smoke she should have been able to get out the window to the east or the door to the south, although that was the side the porch was on and it may also have been fallen in.
